What is Spine?
Basic Spinal Anatomy
The spine (also called spinal column or backbone) protects the spinal cord and is the main structure to support movement, communication to the brain, and sensory function.
Regions of the spine
The cervical vertebrae are the bones that support your neck and head. They form the top part of your spine, labeled C1 to C7 on our chart.
Motion in the Spine
The 24 vertebrae and the connection between each forms a joint, or motion segment. These motion segments work together to allow forward, backward and side-to-side bending and rotation.
